We must do better: ensuring everyone can sleep safe in winter 2025-26

Rough sleeping is rising and the pressure from the housing emergency shows no let-up. More and more people are being forced to accept accommodation that is unsafe and strips them of their dignity. It’s bad enough at any time of year but winter brings acute risks to life and health if you don’t have a safe and comfortable place to stay.

During winter 2024-25 too many people had no emergency accommodation or had to sleep in communal night shelters – particularly in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Just a few years after Scotland made big strides towards eradicating rough sleeping during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re going backwards.

What are the reasons, how is it affecting people at the hard edges and how do we turn things around? And what does a great system look like?

Join this online event to hear directly from the GHIFT team of people with lived experience of homelessness about their recent investigation into this issue in Glasgow. They will talk about findings from their survey and conversations with people who were left to sleep on the streets during the cold, damp and stormy winter just passed.

You’ll also hear from frontline experts about their planned response this winter.

And importantly, bring your perspective to discussions about how we can do better in winter 2025-26 and beyond – every day of the year. What needs to be put in place to make sure that everyone’s right to a safe home is met?
